The primary deities of the temple, Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, are all made from daru, a sacred neem log.
Unlike the stone or metal idols found in most Hindu temples, the Jagannath image is made of wood and is replaced ceremonially every twelve to nineteen years.
The temple was supposedly first constructed by King Indradyumna and afterward repaired by other kings, including Anangabhima Deva.
The annual Ratha Yatra, where beautifully decorated temple carriages drag the deities, has made the temple famous.
The temple is an essential stop to the four holiest Hindu temples, the Char Dham.
